This is Dance Data Project® (DDP)’s seventh annual study examining the gender distribution of leadership at ballet and classically based companies in the United States. This is DDP’s fourth iteration of the report examining the Largest 150 companies. This report analyzes the gender distribution of Artistic, Executive, and Associate/Assistant Directors, and for the third year, includes Heads of Schools, Heads of Second Companies, and Rehearsal Directors. DDP continues to expand our analysis of leadership positions within ballet, and, for the first time, the gender distribution of music directors and conductors among the Largest 150 companies is examined.

This is Dance Data Project®’s (DDP) third Largest Contemporary and Modern Companies Report. This year’s report covers 125 companies, an increase from the 75 companies included in 2023, marking a substantial expansion in DDP’s annual analysis of contemporary and modern dance companies.
DDP has released its first report analyzing gender representation in choreography for The Nutcracker and other holiday productions. This mini report or “Data Byte” covers the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 seasons.

With this Data Byte, Dance Data Project® examines the role of resident choreographers at prominent dance companies for the fourth year annually. New additions to this year’s report include the Additional 50 U.S. Ballet & Classically Based Companies and an expanded global company sample. As a result, DDP analyzes 348 companies, a significant increase from the 270 companies previously studied.
