  • Stephanie Lake for Sydney Dance Company – Program: Resound
    • October 25, 2022 – November 5, 2022: Sydney Dance Company will present Resound, a triple bill featuring new works by Stephanie Lake (female) and Rafael Bonachela (male) alongside a repertory work also by Rafael Bonachela (male). 
  • Cathy Marston for Houston Ballet – Program: Summer and Smoke
    • March 9, 2023 – March 19, 2023: Houston Ballet will present Summer and Smoke, a triple bill featuring a world premiere work by Cathy Marston (female), alongside works by Stanton Welch (male) and George Balanchine (male). 
  • Jessica Lang for Pacific Northwest Ballet – Program: Boundless
    • March 17, 2023 – March 26, 2023: Pacific Northwest Ballet will present Boundless, a triple bill featuring new works by Jessica Lang (female), and Alejandro Cerrudo (male), alongside a work by Penny Saunders (female). 
  • Margarita Armas for Miami City Ballet at Jacob’s Pillow 
    • August 24, 2022 – August 28, 2022: Miami City Ballet will perform at Jacob’s Pillow. Their quadruple bill program will feature a world premiere work by Margarita Armas (female) alongside works by Martha Graham (female), George Balanchine (male), and Jerome Robbins (male). 
  • Bobbi Jene Smith for Paris Opera Ballet 
    • March 17, 2023 – March 30, 2023: The Paris Opera Ballet will present an evening-length world premiere by choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith (female). Smith’s work will be the only choreography featured within the program.

This free, online leadership curriculum offers creative solutions to properly equip dance leaders of the future with vital skills to strengthen their careers. It is not only for Artistic or Executive Director candidates, but also choreographers, those who are thinking about starting their own companies, and members of Boards of Directors.

  • Toledo Ballet Appoints New Artistic Director
    • Effective July 21, 2022: Toledo Ballet has announced the appointment of Eric Otto (male) as the new artistic director and head of curriculum of the company. Otto succeeds Lisa Mayer-Lang (female) whose departure was announced on January 4, 2022. This is a female-to-male transition.
  • Yorkshire Ballet Seminars Appoints New Artistic Director
    • July 2, 2022: Yorkshire Ballet Seminars, “The UK’s first residential summer school,” announced Cira Robinson (female) will take the reins of the school effective December 2022. Robinson succeeds Iain Mackay (male). This is a male-to-female transition.

DANCE DATA PROJECT® FINDINGS SHOW GENDER-BASED WAGE AND OPPORTUNITY GAP IN DANCE LEADERSHIP

Dance Data Project® (DDP) today released its fourth annual Artistic and Executive Leadership Report, tripling the scope of our inaugural Report of this kind to survey 150 total U.S. ballet companies. DDP’s study demonstrates the persistence of a glaring gender-based pay and opportunity gap:

-Only 30% of Artistic Directors at the Largest 50 ballet companies in the United States are women
-Over the past five years, the Largest 50 ballet companies have had more than twice as many men than women in the role of Artistic Director
-In 2018, there were 15 female and 34 male Artistic Directors
-In 2019, there were 13 female and 33 male Artistic Directors
-In 2020, there were 14 female and 33 male Artistic Directors
-In 2021, there were 15 female and 35 male Artistic Directors
-In 2022, there are 15 female and 35 male Artistic Directors

    • July 18, 2022: Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Founder of Urban Bush Women was awarded the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize. This award “is given to U.S. artists who, as described by the renowned actress Lillian Gish, have made “an outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world” and to people’s “understanding and enjoyment of life.””

  •  Rena Butler selected as Parsons Dance GenerationNOW Fellowship. 
    • July 11, 2022: Parsons Dance announced Rena Butler (female) as the recipient of the GenerationNOW fellowship. This fellowship includes a three week residency resulting in a world premiere to be featured in the 2023 Joyce season.

  • Gibney Dance POP: Performance Opportunity Project 
    • Gibney Dance has announced that new theater dates in conjunction with their Performance Opportunity Project have opened up. 
    • This project “enables non-profit companies and individual dance artists to self-produce performances and showings at Gibney. Artists can participate in POP through Performances, Showings, or Open Rehearsals. POP Performances offer a three-night run in The Theater (Studio H) at 280 Broadway.”

  • 2022 Keir Choreographic Award Winners Announced
    • July 3, 2022: The Keir Choreographic Award winners were announced. This program provides a “fully paid opportunity for eight independent Australian artists to develop and share works with audiences and an esteemed jury of dance luminaries” as well as substantial monetary prizes for the winners. Tra Mi Dinh (female) was awarded the Keir Choreographic Award and $50,000, while Jenni Large was awarded the People’s Choice Award and $10,000

  • Meg Stuart at Bolzano Danza 2022
    • July 17 & 19, 2022: Meg Stuart’s work Cascade will be presented as part of the 2022 Bolzano Danza Festival in Bozen, Italy.
