This program recognizes and supports a new generation of traditional artists ages 18-35 that have demonstrated a high level of skill in\, commitment to\, and leadership in their traditional art form in Appalachian Regional Commission counties in Kentucky\, North Carolina\, and Tennessee. Awards provide financial support to ETAP participants to ensure the continuation of traditional knowledge and artistic skills within their respective cultural communities. \nThe 2021 ETAP will award $5\,000 grants (with limited restrictions) to participants for learning opportunities including training\, networking\, and promotion. Some examples of traditional arts practiced in Central Appalachia are Cherokee stamped pottery\, African American buck dancing/clogging\, Anglo American ballads\, seed saving/seed sharing\, and many more. \nImportant Dates and Deadlines\n\nApplication Deadline: 5:00 p.m. ET on November 3\, 2021 for online applications; mailed applications must be postmarked by November 1\, 2021\nApplicants will be notified of their status by November 22\, 2021\nFunds for supported projects must be used by June 30\, 2023\nThe first virtual convening will be held December 11\, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ET; additional virtual and in-person convening dates are TBD\n\nEligibility Requirements\nApplicants for the Emerging Traditional Artist Program must: \n\nBe an individual folk or traditional artist practicing music\, handcrafts/material culture\, and/or foodways.\nBe 18-35 years of age.\nHave not had an opportunity to participate in high-quality professional development sessions.\nBe a United States citizen\, lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence\, or have permission from the Department of Homeland Security to work permanently in the U.S.\nHave been a resident of a Kentucky\, North Carolina\, or Tennessee ARC (Appalachian Regional Commission) county for a period of at least two years immediately before the application deadline.\nExpect to maintain residency in an ARC county during the three-year cohort cycle.\nSubmit a complete and accurate application.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL SERVICE FOR CITIZEN-ARTISTS.\nArtistYear is the first national AmeriCorps program for artists to dedicate themselves to a year of service to our country.\n\nWHY WE EXIST \n4 million disadvantaged youth in our nation do not have access to arts education (National Endowment of Arts). Yet research shows when underserved students are involved in the arts\, they reap significant academic\, social\, and personal benefits.  ArtistYear’s mission is to address this Arts Education Gap by ensuring every underserved student in America has arts education through a National Service Arts Corps. \nWHAT WE DO\nWe do so by developing\, supporting and placing exceptional ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows–recent higher-education arts graduates across artistic disciplines including actors\, creative writers\, dancers\, designers\, filmmakers\, musicians\, photographers\, and visual artists –as full-time Teaching Artists at low-income schools. Once placed in a low-income school with a partner teacher\, each Fellow provides 1700 hours of arts education\, deepening the quality of\, and exposure to\, arts standards via “Push-In” Classes (integrating arts with other subjects)\, Arts Clubs (arts programming linked to school-day curriculum) and Arts Interventions (small group sessions for off-track/at risk youth). \nThis innovative strategy significantly bolsters arts education for our nation’s most vulnerable youth\, with all its attendant benefits\, while also improving student academic engagement\, enhancing school climate and capacity\, benefiting the larger community\, and underscoring the importance of service for the next generation of Citizen-Artists. \nWHAT IS THE 2021 COHORT APPLICATION TIMELINE?\nOur rolling application process is open!
